My typing experience helped me as virtual assistant
Typewriter

I took up Bachelor in Computer Data Processing Management degree in one of the state universities in the Philippines. During my freshman days, we had a Typing 101 subject – 3 units which is equivalent to a major subject. “What!” I said to myself. Stunned why such subject was included in our college curriculum. I was adamant that we will not use this typing skills in our career life.

First day of my Typing 101, a typewriter was in front of me. I felt at ease and confident that I will ace this subject. My only known method then was typing using two fingers in each hand, criss crossing each other on the keyboard.

Our professor gave each student a guide – a paper board with a typewriter keyboard drawing. She instructed us to place our left short, ring, middle, and index fingers on “A, S, D, F” keys, respectively. While our right index, middle, ring and little fingers to “J, K, L, ;” keys, respectively. That was an easy peasy lemon squeezy!

But I realized, how about the other letters, characters, numbers, etc. I only have ten fingers! That was when my dilemma began.

I had difficulty in maneuvering my fingers on the typewriter keyboard. It was a challenge for me. Sad to say, I failed my typing speed mid-term exam. I was so upset during that time and can’t accept the fact that I failed a simple and relegate subject.

But I didn’t give up, I persistently practiced using the correct placement of fingers on each key. And to my surprise, I passed the final exam with flying colors. I applied my typing skills during the production of my thesis and encoding of computer programs. I never stop enhancing it from then on.

For me, the bottom line was not only learning how to type properly, and the correct placement of fingers, but it also taught me on how to stay focused and at the same time ensuring the accuracy of my typing jobs.

My Typing 101 subject in college equipped me in my freelancing job as a Virtual Assistant where majority of my work entails typing – preparing memos, reports, minutes of the meeting, email correspondence, transcribing, data entry, email correspondence, and other administrative tasks.

Nowadays, typing for me is just a walk in the park, so to speak. Humility aside, I can type with ease and without looking on the keyboard.
